Research Reflections

Monday 6 November

The 25th birthday conference of the journal, Leisure Studies, was recently held at Loughborough University. Leeds Met supplied a founding editor, another managing editor, current members of the editorial and advisory boards and a former chair of the Leisure Studies Association. The silver jubilee of a journal is cause for celebration, a time to reflect on the journey and to survey the future, a future in which political and commercial interests alighting on the potential of leisure look to leisure scholars for advice.

With all the problems of an expanding, interdisciplinary field of study rather than a secure discipline, the journal has been the fulcrum for leisure studies. Characterised by a critical social science perspective it has provided an invaluable interdisciplinary approach bringing together fields of study such as sport, tourism, media and culture. The journal has proved itself to be one of the most successful international journals with subscriptions world-wide providing a platform for an expanding community of scholars globally. It has raised the level of debate and armed scholars with the theory, arguments and confidence to engage with policymakers and practitioners. Leisure research crosses boundaries - we would be pleased to hear from those working in related fields.
