Chancellor Brendan Foster was at the Gandhi Hall to present his Chancellor's Awards to inspirational staff members following the first day of graduation. He was joined on stage by the compere for the ceremony, Professor Anne Gregory.

Twelve awards were given to staff who have ‘gone the extra mile’ in service of Leeds Met and our students. The short-listed nominees and award-winners were selected as having shown enthusiasm and a positive attitude to their work, who who go beyond the boundaries of their job-roles and have shown an imaginative and creative approach to implementing the university’s vision and values.

Among the award-winners was Rai Shacklock, Head of Leeds Met's UK Centre for Events Management, who was presented with the inaugural Professor Robert Ellis award for outstanding teaching. As leader of one of the university’s largest subjects groups in terms of students and staff members Rai goes beyond the boundaries of her job role on a daily basis. She constantly endeavours to support her team and to integrate the vision and values of the university. She has managed the department to a position as a leading global player, whilst constantly keeping the student experience at the forefront of her priorities. This positive attitude cascades through the team and has been a huge factor in many recent successes.

The other winners were:

Ian Dickinson - For going far beyond his remit as a learning officer. He is regarded as an ambassador for the university, presenting conference papers and demonstrating other aspects of his work related to virtual learning. This enables him to rub shoulders with other like-minded champions of virtual technology which in turn helps his faculty to gain an impressive reputation as being at the forefront of innovative teaching methods. Ian worked very closely with the late Professor Robert Ellis. Following Robert’s untimely death, he was determined that the pioneering projects they had developed together would thrive and grow.

Associate Counsellors
Pam Braithwaite, Sandra Dewey, Sue Dominey, Janie Newton, Joanne Benson, Bella Doswell, Sheila Kirkham, Delphine Dorgu, Lynn Fryer, Lynne Heath, Linda Murgatroyd, Miranda Orton, Margaret Preest, Madeleine Robinson, Sarah Rolfe, Sue Stanwell and Isobel Webster - The ‘unsung heroes’ within the university. The Asssociate Counsellors hope is to restore vision and character when it is damaged; rebuilding confidence and self-esteem through skilful interventions that are always life-enhancing and sometimes, quite literally life saving.

Tony Frederick - Tony's warmth, generosity of spirit, good humour, courteousy, friendly and supportive nature generates a positive atmosphere. He displays enormous reserves of diligence and patience and is always ready with a smile, a laugh and a joke. He goes further than the extra mile every day and encourages others to do the same.

Sheila Casey - Shelia consistently displays enthusiasm in her role, often working way beyond her contracted hours, demonstrating energy and a remarkable attitude to her work. She is regularly praised by all around her for her efforts, not only from staff and students, but also people from outside the university.

Judith Marsden - Judith has worked at Leeds Met for 40 years and is particularly noted for her management of significant change during this time. Her clear dedication to her role and her constant focus on the welfare of students is remarkable, enhanced by having a work ethic which is incorporated into her lifestyle, so there are no boundaries in terms of time commitment. Seven days a week, 24 hours a day Judith is available for often much needed guidance and support in times of heightened emotional experiences for many of our students and their families.

Keith Rowntree - Keith has become the champion for our Leeds Met Headingley archive. He has carried out much of the work that has gone into creating this in his own time, combining this with his other daily duties within the library. He has consistently gone the extra mile to ensure that the archive is preserved, cared for and developed to benefit the university now and in the future.

Video Production Team
Andrew Riley, Bob Bjorek, John Lynch, Mike Hooper, Paul Wilmott - The Video Production Team ensures that our successes as a university are captured and made available for reflection and further celebration. They are prepared to go that extra mile to ensure that every special moment within the Leeds Met calendar is recorded. They are a team that is willing to work beyond expectations and they ensure that we are able to showcase the achievements and experiences of our students during their time at Leeds Met.

Stephen Rennie - Despite many obstacles including a very limited budget Stephen has managed to engage students in overseas experiences in countries such as Sri Lanka , Malaysia, Nepal and Romania to name a few. He has offered the students constant support throughout their experiences, maintaining email contact and being available to speak to them at any time of the day or night. Ultimately he has been their first port of call for encouragement, information and support during these life changing experiences.

Phil Day - Phil offers support and guidance, giving his own personal time to do so. He understands the importance of celebrating the achievements and successes of his students and does this by organising displays, shows and exhibitions to great effect and with enthusiasm, humour and a good heart.

Babita Bhogal - Babita has remained clear and steadfast in achieving the shared objectives of the university and has done so in an imaginative and creative way. She has been instrumental in the organisation of a nationwide residential course held at Leeds Met and external feedback from the likes of the Vice-Chancellor of Bristol University has highlighted her professional approach to completing tasks.

Library Team
Jo Norry, Judith Atteridge, Katherine Everest, Chris McLay, Debbie Morris, Keith Rowntree, Stuart Smith, Helen Loughran and Paul Riley (The whole Library team are commended for their contribution to one of the universities most visible and student centred initiatives with the above core library team receiving the award on their behalf.) - By taking into account the needs and wants of the students, the Lbrary Team put into practice our vision of placing students at the centre of what we do. Their enthusiasm to move away from the norms has resulted in a creative and inspiring place for learning, helping to meet the differing and individual needs of each and every one of our students.
