The eleventh Annual Women’s Fun Run, which took place at Headingley Campus in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, was won by 24 year-old support worker Jennie Guard.
Jennie, who came second in last year's fun run, was delighted when she finished the five kilometre (3.2 miles) run in just 18 minutes and 53 seconds. Emily said: “It was great; I really enjoyed it."
Exactly one minute after Jennie crossed the finish line, 27 year-old ecologist, Sally Fraser, followed to claim second place, with 15 year-old Garforth Community College student and Great Student Runner Hannah Seddon coming third after 21 minutes and 25 seconds.
All participants received a commemorative Fun Run T-shirt and spot prizes were handed out to the three youngest runners - 12 year-old Lauren Patterson, from Prince Henry's School in Otley, ten year-old Hannah Quinn, from Cottingley Primary School and ten year-old Holly Clarke, from St Oswalds C of E Junior. Holly and Lauren have both been close to people who have been affected by cancer and, prior to the run, Holly managed to raise around £50 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
This year’s event was started by world-class athlete Tracey Morris, from Leeds, who took part in the 2004 Olympic Games, and was aimed at encouraging women to follow active lifestyles.
Over 250 entries were received for the race and participants paid an entry fee donation of at least £8 each. So far the race has raised about £2,300 for Macmillan Cancer Support and sponsorship money, which is still coming in, is expected to raise much more.
