Team EWR rise to the Three Peaks Challenge
19/06/06
Following their return from the Himalayas, members of the Everest West Ridge (EWR) expedition joined forces with members of the Carnegie sport science support team to participate in the Three Peaks Challenge in an effort to help raise money for the Rugby Football League (RFL) Benevolent Fund. Team EWR commented that to successfully climb the peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike & Snowdon in 24 hours you require the team qualities similar to that necessary upon expeditions. Participants have to learn how to endure and overcome unfamiliar and physically difficult circumstances; teams need to plan and coordinate personal and team performance; team members are required to reduce and/or submit personal preferences and needs for broader team objectives; are exposed to the elements where personal honesty to the cause was tested and where participants are required to attain several goals (i.e. summits) prior to achieving the larger objective.
Using the diversity and unpredictability of the 'great outdoors' the three peaks captures the essence of a 'true challenge'. Members of Team EWR would like to congratulate all participants who successfully completed the course and who raised a significant amount of money for the RFL Benevolent Fund. In addition, Team EWR would like to thank the Leeds Met staff and outdoor instrucutors for organising and coordinating such a successful event.
For the Three Peaks Challenge, the team included Steve Cobley

Training Consultant - Physical Training Core, British Army) ,
