Leeds Metropolitan University sponsored Youssou N’Dour - fresh from him being the only musician to play three Live 8 concerts (London, Eden Project & Paris) - in the 40th Harrogate International Festival on Sunday 31 July. The School of Applied Global Ethics also took the opportunity to exhibit at the venue.

One of the most celebrated African musicians in history, Youssou N’Dour and the Super Etoile are Africa’s most popular band on a worldwide scale and N’Dour’s mix of traditional Senegalese m'balax, with eclectic influences ranging from Cuban samba to hip hop, jazz and soul has won him an international fan base of millions.

Renowned for his remarkable range and poise and for his prodigious musical intelligence as a writer, bandleader, and producer, N’Dour has made mbalax famous throughout the world during more than 20 years of recording and touring outside of Senegal with his band, The Super Etoile. In the West, Youssou has collaborated with musicians including Peter Gabriel, Sting and Neneh Cherry with whom he had the global hit 7 Seconds.

Youssou N’Dour and the Super Etoile performed at the Harrogate International Centre on Sunday 31st July at 8pm.
