11/01/06

Sports stars celebrated the redevelopment of Headingley Carnegie Stadium in partnership with Leeds Met. The new name for the stadium, which held its first Test in 1899 was announced alongside the news that the ground is retaining its status as an international Test venue until 2019.
Familiar faces from the cricket world on hand for the press launch included umpire Dickie Bird, England players Geoff Cope and Matthew Hoggard, and ex-player Ray Illingworth. Rugby star of the 1950s and early 1960s and former Leeds Met student Lewis Jones was also present.

England cricket captain Michael Vaughan commented: “Speaking on behalf of all cricketers who have played at Headingley, this partnership is great news, as the ground is perfect for the game of cricket to continue.”

President of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club Robin Smith said: “We welcome the partnership with Leeds Met. The university’s Carnegie brand needs no introduction into the world of sport and this is a wonderful development that is greatly welcome.”

Chairman of Leeds CF&A, Paul Caddick added: “Headingley is the spiritual home for the theatre of sporting dreams which is well driven, and it is with sincere thanks to Leeds City Council, Sport England and Leeds Met that this is continuing to be. Welcome to a new era with Leeds Met as a partner, sharing the same passion for sport and business.”
