Summer Graduation 2008

Leeds Metropolitan University  celebrated students' achievements during Summer Graduation 2008, which took place at our Headingley Campus.

Summer Schools

A host of Summer School projects took place during July, to challenge, motivate and inspire young people from across the region.

Brass Arts Festival

The Side by Side Challenges took place with students, staff and friends of Leeds Met, including mountaineer Alan Hinkes following the Hadrian's Wall coast to coast walk.

The Leeds Met Arts Festival provided an opportunity for graduating students in the creative arts to showcase their innovative and creative works to friends, family, the Leeds Met community and industry employers.

A new multi-media exhibition, powerfully delivering the messages of Anne Frank for the 21st century was on display during June 2008 at the Gandhi Hall, James Graham Building, Headingley Campus.

The third Carnegie Great Student Run broke last year's entry numbers with over one and a half thousand people entering the 5km race to join in the carnival atmosphere.

Ethiopian distance running legend Haile Gebrselassie received an honorary doctorate in Sports Science from Leeds Met for his outstanding contribution to his sport.

Senator George Mitchell, the US statesman who helped broker the Good Friday peace agreement returned to Leeds Met on 25 April 2008. The Visiting Professor of the Leeds Met School of Applied Global Ethics discussed a range of peace issues with students and staff, before delivering the Leeds international Olof Palme Memorial Peace Lecture at Leeds Civic Hall.

Brass Arts Festival

The inaugural Brass Arts Festival, organised by Leeds Met’s partners Black Dyke Band, took place in April. The festival was created through the University’s creative partnership with Black Dyke Band, which gives an opportunity to celebrate being ‘a university of festivals and partnerships’.

Festival of Partnerships for Students

The Festival of Partnerships for Students was held from 23 January - 29 February 2008 to celebrate, promote and engage students, staff and partners in our pioneering partnerships.

University Springschool

Leeds Rhinos celebrated winning the Carnegie World Club Challenge 2008 against Melbourne Storm at Elland Road on 22 February 2008.

Following the success of last year’s University Springschool pilot event, school students with a hearing impairment attended a two-day workshop, to raise awareness of and aspire towards higher education.

Carnegie Challenge Cup 2008

Leeds Met Carnegie made history by being the first university team to reach the third round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup, after beating Leigh East 20-8 at Headingley Campus on 23 February 2008. Leeds Met gave a terrific performance against Doncaster in the third round at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Freshers Festival

The Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Squad used Carnegie as a training base in preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The Leeds Met Christmas Festival 2007 was a week long success, with the North Pole Collection receiving a great number of donations from both staff and students, which will definitely make a difference to many of the homeless within the community.

Leeds Carnegie saw the club’s biggest ever opening game crowd with 10,674 adults and children enjoying the festival atmosphere of the Carnegie Carnival prior to the premiership match versus Gloucester on 16 September 2007.

The Staff Development Festival 2007 kicked off with a bang on Wednesday 29 August, with a performance from The Orchestra. The fun and festivities continued throughout the festival ending with a spectacular finale at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Leeds Met’s Road to Wembley team toured the coveted Carnegie Challenge Cup around schools and clubs up and down the country.

Leeds Metropolitan University celebrated student achievements at Summer Graduation 2007, which took place at the Headingley Campus from Wednesday 18 – Saturday 21 July 2007.

Great Student Run

Students, staff, families and the community took part in the second Carnegie Great Student Run 2007 which started at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and finished with participants soaking up the festive atmosphere at our Headingley Campus.

UCAS Fairs

Leeds Met working with Leeds Careers hosted the largest ever Leeds UCAS fair in the Regional Tennis Centre at Headingley Campus during April 2007.

BUSA

Leeds Met BUSA teams continued their success in the BUSA League programme during the 2006/2007 season.

Lectures

Guest lectures at Leeds Met during 2007 include Dee Caffari who delivered the Annual Carnegie Lecture. Hilary Benn MP presented his annual politics lecture ‘Changing the World: Why Politics Matter’. Other guests include Leeds Met Honorary Doctor Judith Donovan CBE,and Tom Vosa Head of Market Economics, Yorkshire Bank.

Carnegie Challenge Cup

Leeds Met is the new primary partner of the RFL’s most prestigious domestic knock-out tournament, the Carnegie Challenge Cup, which is set to return to Wembley this year. Leeds Met Carnegie secured a ‘stunning’ 38-24 victory over the strongest of the amateur clubs, Wigan St Patricks, in the opening round.

State of the art recording studios

Leeds Met has become the first university to receive a top music industry accreditation for its music courses, helped by its brand new state of the art recording studios.

Freshers Fortnight

New students received a warm welcome during Freshers Festival 2006.

The Staff Development Festival 2006 culminated with the Inter-Campus Run and Cycle Ride and the Festival Finale.

Partnership with Leeds Rugby

A partnership between Leeds Met and Leeds Rugby the first of its kind between a university and a professional sports club in the UK.

Summer Prom 2006

Leeds Met hosted its inaugural Summer Prom on Sunday 16 July 2006, at the Graduation Hall on The Acre, in the stunning grounds of the university’s Headingley Campus.

Innovation North Research Conference

The Innovation North Research Conference took place at Headingley Campus, Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 July.

3 Peaks Challenge
Nine groups tackled the Three Peaks Challenge, the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis 1344m), England (Scafell Pike 978m) and Wales (Snowdon 1085m).
