A host of past, present and future sporting talent joined with Leeds Met staff, students and friends to celebrate the opening of the new sport science research facilities at Headingley Campus. The Carnegie Research Institute, which was officially opened by Carnegie alumnus and Leeds Met honorary doctor Brendan Foster, boasts world class sporting and scientific facilities designed to enable talented athletes to monitor their performance and reach their full potential.

Guests were treated to a series of tours and demonstrations of the equipment, including; the biomechanics of cricket bowling, treadmill testing, Bod Pod body composition analysis and Cybex muscle function testing.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Brendan Foster said: “I’m
delighted to be here at Carnegie and to open this facility. I
hope it goes from strength to strength.” Carlton Cooke,
Associate Dean and Head of the School of Sport, Exercise and
Physical Education, thanked staff across the university for their
role in delivering the project, adding: “This is a major
step forward for Leeds Met, Carnegie and those who want to provide
a high quality student experience.”
Amongst the guests were Yorkshire County cricketer and England’s bowling hero of the winter test victory against South Africa, Matthew Hoggard, along with Leeds Rhinos’ coach, Tony Smith.
Matthew Hoggard, who participated in a demonstration of the
Carnegie Research Institute’s world class facilities to
analyse biomechanical aspects of bowling, said: “The facilities
here are fantastic. It’s always great to have sporting
facilities of this calibre in the region, and whereas we used
to have to travel to Loughborough, Yorkshire Cricket will be
getting a great amount of use from this.”

Tony Smith, whose Carnegie World Club Challenge winning Leeds Rhinos have already made use of the Institute, said: “We’ve had the pleasure of using the facilities before they opened. It’s particularly beneficial that it’s multi-purpose and combines sporting and scientific excellence. We’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with Carnegie and using them again in the near future.”

The opening of the Carnegie Research Institute was followed by the inaugural annual Carnegie Lecture, on Sport and Business, delivered by Brendan Foster.
