Networking is about creating contacts with people who can help you in your career development during your search for employment. Contacts can provide you with valuable advice or guidance to help you progress into your chosen field or give you an insight into what it is like to do their job. While the main point of networking is not to ask someone to give you a job directly, it can sometimes lead to job opportunities if an opportunity arises. Not all jobs get advertised, they are promoted within the company or by word of mouth, so the phrase ‘It’s who you know, not what you know’ is very important here.
A good start is to build on your existing network. Think about the people you know – friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, acquaintances, family of friends or friends of family - and keep in mind anyone that these people can introduce you to as well. You’ll be surprised how many contacts you already have. Sign up to online social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to create connections. ‘Like’ company Facebook pages to keep up-to-date with their latest news and achievements and ‘follow’ people or organisations you are interested in. Join group pages and engage in discussions.
Be specific about what you would like to ask your contact, don’t just tell them you are looking for a job and leave it at that. You could ask them if they know anyone they could introduce you to or know of any positions that they can tell you about. You could ask them how to gain relevant work experience or about their own career path or experience of working for a company. Share with them your career goals and what you are looking for and tell them about your skills and experience. Most people are happy to help you. Be proactive and attend networking events such as graduate fairs. Aim to speak to at least three new people at each event. Prepare questions in advance and be clear about what you would like to find out, but show you have done your research by avoiding questions that you can find the answers to on the company’s website.

Finally, always remember to thank your contacts for their time and help.
