The Video Production Unit is a centrally provided resource and are part of Information, Media and Technology Services (IMTS) along with computing and audio-visual provision.
Our multi-skilled team of six staff can direct and edit projects and have individual specialisms in video engineering, sound, camera & lighting, motion graphics and web based applications. The team can offer a range of experience and include two members of staff who are recent graduates of Leeds Metropolitan.
We have a strong track record in producing material for our University; for instance, we have produced multi-camera recording of University Graduations since 1989.
Our contribution to the student experience is a priority and we endeavour to involve students in the work of the unit when appropriate.
To view some of the unit’s output see the sections below and for more, please go to www.youtube.com/leedsmet.
The team can produce material to suit a wide range of academic requirements from a simple single camera recording of a lecture streamed straight onto our in-house eStream server to a complex dramatised piece of teaching material with high production values.
We also provide a service for recording of student presentations and role-plays in a dedicated Presentation Suite situated in the Library Building at City Campus.
Video is a powerful medium for disseminating information and marketing. We provide promotional videos for all University services as well as Faculties.
We produced a video for screening at our University’s Summer Graduations,we regularly produce individual student profiles for embedding in web pages and during the summer of 2010 we produced an induction video for new students for the upgraded multi-gyms on both campuses.
We try to engage students as much as possible in the work of the unit. Specifically we use our capacity for multi-camera location recording of events to provide a hands-on, practical production experience for media students. Opportunities include location recording with Northern Ballet Theatre of a production of Peter Pan (see below) and coverage of high profile University sporting fixtures. We can offer experience in camera operations, sound, directing, vision-mixing, as well as journalism and presenting skills.
We are involved in supporting events across our University. As well as providing images that appear on large display screens as part of the event, we also record and document them. Examples include the annual Staff Awards, the Northern Design Awards and the University Graduation Ceremonies.
Graduations 2010
Our video coverage of University activities and events has become an integral part of the life of our University. The embedded videos on our website offer a window into life at Leeds Metropolitan. Often the live events covered (see above) give us the opportunity to create a short news piece. Major events such as Graduation allow us to create videos to enhance the profile of the event and a showcase for the wider world.

We undertake externally commissioned work with a wide range of outputs. We cover external events booked via Well Met Conferencing and often work with organisations with strong links to our University such as Leeds City Council or UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association), as well as University Partners such as Northern Ballet, the Black Dyke Band and Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
We can advise you on the best means of distribution for the material we produce for you.
There are three main ways we currently deliver our output:
We can provide multiple DVD copies of any of our productions, these can be fully authored DVDs with bespoke graphics and menu structure. Bulk copies can be produced at competitive rates by the University’s Off-Air Recordings and Copying Service. Every summer the unit provide sell through DVDs of the Graduation Ceremonies.
We have “partner” status with You Tube and have our own channel.
This allows us to upload larger files of longer videos of an hour or more.
In July of 2010 our YouTube EDU (education) channel was ranked number one in the world, in terms of monthly views, ahead of any other UK educational establishment, and beating off stiff competition from large American and European universities.
We have our own internal video streaming service called eStream, this is used primarily for Teaching and Learning Material. Click here to visit eStream.
No charge is made for video streaming on either You Tube or eStream.
