From time to time, student may encounter issues which may prevent them from fully engaging with their course, submitting pieces of work or sitting examinations. Where this is the case, students may are able to claim 'extenuating circumstances' and therefore the university may decide to offer them an opportunity to take this assessment at a later time or in another format.
Students are asked to submit claims for extenuating circumstances on the appropriate form which is submitted (usually the a course administrator, course leader or other appropriate member of university staff). The circumstances will then be considered and the university may make provision for the student to receive an extension (mitigation at the point of assessment) or for their circumstances to be considered by a mitigation panel where an extension will not suffice.
Staff will find the details and guidance relevant to the processes relating to Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances below. You are advised to review the 'Extenuating Circumstances and Mitigation Staff Development'.
