Weekend success continues for Leeds Met

Weekend success continues for Leeds Met

15/02/2010

Leeds Met ever impressive sports sides enjoyed another largely successful weekend in both BUCS fixtures and national league games.

Carnegie Netball got back on track in the Superleague with an impressive win over Team Northumbria in an eventful and thoroughly entertaining 57-47 battle. Co-coach Marion Lofthouse explains: "It was another thrilling game of Superleague netball.  Leeds piled on the pressure in the third quarter and gained a 10-goal lead. At the beginning of the 4th, Team Northumbria stormed back cutting that lead to five but the Leeds defence held firm and our shooters were clinical in their finishing."

Men's basketball stay joint top of National League One following an impressive home win against London Leopards 93-72 on Saturday but unfortunately suffered heartbreak on Valentine's Day with an away defeat to Bristol Academy Flyers 80-72 on Sunday.

The women's basketball fought to an overtime win to beat Team Northumbria 94-93 at Headingley Campus and now lie third in the league behind league leaders City of Sheffield Hatters.

Men's football face AFC Emley tonight in a top of the table Northern Counties East league fixture. The two sides go into the game with Carnegie in top spot but with just a point separating the two sides. The lads will be hoping to get back on track following two defeats and a draw in their last three games. Tonight's fixture will go a long way in deciding who finishes in top spot as Carnegie look set for promotion into the Premier division.

There was no Cup final hangover as Leeds Carnegie Ladies celebrated their recent cup win with a 6-0 demolition of visitors Watford Ladies at Throstle Nest. Goals from Ellen White, Sue Smith, Jess Clarke, Letesha Cannonier and a brace from Remi Allen sealed a fine win for the League Cup champions. "This had the potential to be a bit of a banana skin," said Leeds manager Rick Passmoor, "but we want that top-two place in the league. There's plenty more points to play for this season and performances like these are what I'm looking for."

Sadly, the news wasn't so good for the reserves; despite being bolstered by the appearance of first-team regulars Olivia Thackray and Gemma Bonner, they lost 1-0 to Preston North End.

The men's and women's volleyball teams were both at the University of East Anglia this weekend for the Student Cup finals. The men unfortunately lost in the final - a tight game that saw them lose 2-1 to Sheffield Hallam. The women however, followed up on last weeks National Cup quarter final victory and pulled off a fantastic final victory beating East Anglia on their own turf 2-0 and lifting the Student Cup!
