Tennis club raises over £600 for charity

Tennis club raises over £600 for charity

08/04/2011

Leeds Met Tennis club has risen over £600 for charity from an event held at Headingley Campus.

On Wednesday 6th April members of the University Tennis Team and their friends raised a total of £653.51 for Cancer research UK in memory of Catherine Thompson's mum, women's 1st team and club chair person, who sadly passed away last year.

Louise Assioun, Leeds Met Tennis Manager, said: "At the beginning of the season, the tennis club demonstrated their strength and loyalty to a member of the women's 1st team who sadly lost her mother to cancer. It felt a fitting tribute to Catherine's mum, who loved the sport of tennis, to create a fund raising tennis tournament at the end of the season."

The event included a raffle, BBQ, Music from DJ Moz and a Mini orange doubles tournament which included 14 doubles pairs playing in a round robin tournament. It was eventually won after some great tennis by the Williams Sisters, Harry and Elliot.

Everyone got into the spirit of the event, with some great costumes being worn as fancy dress. A real crowd pleaser included Pete (Men's 3rd team & Coaching scholar) having his head shaved, raising £110 towards the total.

Louise added: "The day was blessed with sunshine, and the students, friends and family created a great atmosphere and raised money for such a good cause. I was very proud and honoured to be the Tennis Manger on Wednesday, as the students continue to demonstrate how they support each other through the good and bad times in University life."

It was a great end of season social to celebrate the successful tennis season of 2010/2011 and also to raise money for such a great cause close to the tennis team's hearts.

James Perry, Athletics Union President, commented: "It's always a pleasure to see our teams put on these wonderful events and even more so when it's for such a great cause. The turnout was fabulous which contributed to the success of the event and helped raise over £600. I hope that the tennis team will make this an annual event and something other teams can look to do."

This was the first charity event organised by the tennis team, which was extremely successful and all proceeds went to a great cause. This will now be an annual event in the tennis team's social calendar; hopefully raising more money in the future.
