Sports Centres

Leeds Met has a huge range of top class sports facilities, with regional centres of excellence in Athletics, Tennis and Gymnastics. Whether you are using our facilities for recreation and fitness or as a competitive athlete, we guarantee some of the best facilities in the region. Use the links on the right to learn about the facilities we have for a wide range of activities.
Athletics
The eight lane, all-weather track and Athletics Centre facilities were completely refurbished in June 1998 with the help of National Lottery funding. The centre provides opportunities for all ages and abilities to train throughout the year. Leeds Carnegie Athletics Club, Leeds Metropolitan University Athletics Club and other Leeds based clubs train on site with full coaching support. Junior athletics coaching sessions take place weekly.
The Centre is free for use by all sports pass holders.
All technical events require the presence of a coach.
For students holding current athletics qualifications, coaching opportunities are available.
Fitness Centres
Headingley Campus and City Campus offer fully equipped fitness centres with a range of modern cardiovascular and resistance machines. In addition, there are fitness facilities at Kirkstall and Sugarwell Court residences.
The fitness centres are designed for all users, however, to ensure the safety of all, University Sport requires everyone to have an induction. In your induction you will receive instruction from a qualified instructor about how to use all the equipment safely and correctly. Inductions are held most days throughout the week at both Headingley Campus and City Campus.
To book an induction, please visit or contact:
Carnegie Sports Centre, Headingley Campus, on 0113 812 3160
or
The Fitness Centre, City Campus, on 0113 812 3346.
Free Weights Facility
At the Carnegie Sports Centre there is a separate free weights facility. Free weights include dumbbells, barbells, bench-press machines and much more. Those interested in using the facility need to book in to have a specialist induction delivered by qualified gym instructors, and must also have their Sports Membership and a Fitness Centre induction prior to booking. Accreditation status may be given to those people who have relevant qualifications (e.g. BAWLA Leaders certificate), or previous experience. For induction information please contact the Carnegie Sports Centre Reception on 0113 812 3160. Access to the Free Weights facility costs £15.00 per annum for Sports Membership holders.
Football
The University has two full size floodlit synthetic turf pitches (STP), a multi-use games area (MUGA), indoor sports halls and outdoor grass pitches. Football at Leeds Met is in a healthy state with the potential to develop even further. The University is keen to build on the Clubs' recent success, and UEFA 'A' License coach and FA Coach Educator John Hall is working with Athletic Union teams to achieve this. He also oversees football development at the University.
Gymnastics
The Gymnastics Centre was opened in November 1989 by Olympic Coach Ron Pickering OBE and is the venue for Leeds City Gymnastics Club and more recently, became a High Performance Centre for men's artistic gymnastics. Student gymnastics take place within the centre and training sessions are timetabled on a Wednesday and Sunday.
Tennis
The Tennis Centre consists of four indoor courts and eight outdoor courts. The centre provides a number of opportunities for students interested in tennis:
University Tennis Club - opportunities are available to play competitively and socially for all students who join the tennis club both indoor and outdoor.
Access to coaching and video analysis
Attaining Personal LTA Coaching Awards
Tennis club membership confers additional opportunities to book indoor and outdoor clay courts, when available. Students not wishing to join the Tennis Club may use the outdoor acrylic courts (weather permitting) and one of the indoor courts (subject to availability). These courts must be booked at the Carnegie Sports Centre Reception.
Swimming
The University has a traditional 20 metre swimming pool which is part of the Carnegie Sports Centre facilities. The pool is for students, staff and teaching groups. We want all our customers to enjoy this facility and so have allocated time for staff, students and family groups.
