Sporting success celebrated at Leeds Met

Sporting success celebrated at Leeds Met

06/05/2011

University sporting achievement and participation was recognised as the 2011 Carnegie Sports Awards took place at Headingley Campus.

The awards marked a celebration of the sporting year and recognised the achievements and participation of all of those who have contributed to the successes achieved by our students in 2010/2011.

The award ceremony honoured the many gifted and talented athletes, both individuals and teams that we have here at Leeds Metropolitan.

The first award of the evening was the Club Officer of the Year and it went to Rachel Fraser from the women's rugby union team. The side has enjoyed considerable success this season culminating in lifting the BUCS Championship trophy at Twickenham following a 34-5 victory over Exeter.

Matthew Firth from the Gymnastics club picked up the Fresher of the Year Award whilst Sports Performance of the Year went to the Women's Volleyball team, after an outstanding season which saw them drop only two sets.

Sportswoman of the Year went to Race Walker Jo Jackson who was crowned Commonwealth Champion in Delhi last October. The Sportsman of the Year accolade was given to Albert Margai from Men's basketball after a superb season both on and off the court.

Pete King was honoured with the Contribution to Campus Sport Award following his continued contribution to the Tchoukball club at the University.

The Club of the Year Award went to the Netball programme for both their performance and attitude on the court and also their focus on coaching and bringing through new talent.

Athletic Union president James Perry was delighted at the evening's celebration of student achievement: "The sports awards have been a great evening where we've been able to reflect on the successes of our sporting students throughout the year. This year has been a hugely successful one both on and off the pitch and it is right to recognise the achievements of our students before everyone leaves for the summer. Once again we have had a successful BUCS year with over 900 fixtures played leading to 34 overall league champions. Being able to represent the University and the name Carnegie in any sport is an experience I know all student athletes will take with them when they leave here."
