Performance Sport & Coaching

Performance Sport & Coaching

The Carnegie name has been synonymous with top quality physical education and performance sport for 75 years. At Leeds Met, we are constantly striving to take our sport to the next level, whether that is competing within the BUSA structure or within national competitions and leagues.

The Leeds Carnegie family of performance sport embraces a number of sports and is looking to continually expand to support talented students and athletes throughout the region and the North of England.

Super League Netball was established in 2005, and Carnegie hosts one of nine franchises. This competition is televised weekly on Sky Sports and features all the top players in the UK.

Leeds Carnegie now has both men's and women's teams playing very successfully in England Basketball's national leagues, which both teams competing at the highest level within the respective National League Division 1. The experience developed by exposure to this level of competition has had a positive effect on BUCS competitions with both teams becoming strong contenders at the university level.

In 2004 Leeds Carnegie entered the football pyramid and after consecutive promotions now play in the Northern Counties East League, which brings entries to both the FA Cup and the FA Vase. Home games are played at conference neighbours Farsley Celtic.

National League Volleyball is also a strength for Carnegie, with Mens and Womens teams  competing in the National Leagues. Strong recruitment to these programmes will hopefully pay dividends performance at this level and has proved successful with both Mens and Womens team winning BUCS and EVA Student cup and championships in 2009

The LTA in partnership with Carnegie has produced a string of talented players over the years that are nationally ranked and several on the tour. GB number 1 Katie O'Brien is a product of the centre, and many top ten ranked juniors train daily at the university.

Leeds Carnegie is also home to the main Triathlon performance Centre in the North of England. The centre has produce World age group champions and medallists over the last three years. Alistair Brownlee, a Leeds Met student is the current Mens World Champion.

As part of the MCC Universities cricket programme, Leeds Met has been at the forefront of performance cricket within the university sector. This centre is a partnership with other local institutions, and features games against other universities 1st class sides and the MCC. Leeds Met provides the majority of the players for the squad.
