National titles for Carnegie Race Walkers

National titles for Carnegie Race Walkers

13/04/2010

Carnegie race walkers are celebrating having scooped two national 20km titles at Victoria Park, London over the weekend.

Sports Performance students Tom Bosworth and Johanna Jackson were both successful at the National Race Walking Championship with further success for other athletes based at the UK Athletics National Race Walking Centre at the University's Headingley Campus.

Tom, 20 won on his debut at the 20k distance in his first senior national championship, taking the lead from the 2009 UK number 1 Luch Finch in the final 4km.  Daniel King, also based at Leeds Met came in second as he overhauled Finch in the final 400 metres. Tom will now seek a high quality race to chase down the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games which take place later in the year.

Jo Jackson finished over six minutes clear of the rest of the field in the women's senior race however she will be disappointed not to have improved on her early season form.  She was sick during the race, but still recovered to win comfortably inside the England Athletics qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games Team.

Last week Carnegie athlete Brendan Boyce raced his debut 50km in Slovakia last week and recorded 4h 8min 7seconds which is an IAAF World Championship qualifying time for 2011 in Degau, Korea.
