National cup finals for Carnegie Volleyball

National cup finals for Carnegie Volleyball

01/03/2011

Fresh from their success at the Student Cup Finals, both men's and women's volleyball teams at Leeds Met are celebrating reaching the National Cup finals.

The women's final will be a repeat of the 2010 game as Leeds Carnegie take on last year's winners Polonia IMKA London hoping to avenge that defeat.

The men's side will take on top of the Super 8s table side Sheffield after beating Division 2 team Tendring 3-0 in the semi final.

Both finals will take place on Saturday 16th April at the National Volleyball Centre, Kettering.

National Cup semi final results:

Men:
Semi Final 1: Leeds Carnegie beat Tendring 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15)
Semi Final 2: Sheffield beat Malory Eagles (London) 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-21)

Women:
Semi Final 1: Polonia IMKA London beat Malory Eagles (London) 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19)

Semi Final 2: Leeds Carnegie beat IMKA London 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15)

In the recent Student Cup Finals Leeds Met's women's team took the title of Student Cup Champions for the third year running after beating Northumbria in the final 2-0 (25-19, 25-13). The men's team from Leeds Met faced last years winners Sheffield Hallam in their final and were able to put right the mistakes from 12 months previous. They stormed to a comfortable victory winning 2-0 (25-15, 25-15).

The two winning teams had an impressive record reaching the final, throughout the two days neither side dropped a set against their opposition in either the pool or knock out stages showing what a strong calibre of players the university has.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards also went to the players from the winning University. Atilia Berndt scooped the award in the men's competition, with Virag Farkas claiming the award for the women.

The third placed positions went to Northumbria University men and Durham University women.
