Leeds Met stars dominate in Sussex

Leeds Met stars dominate in Sussex

17/05/2010

Badminton players at Leeds Met are celebrating further success following a successful outing at the Sussex National Elite Open.

Anita Raj Kaur and Joanne Quay brought two titles each back to Yorkshire from the event, held at Olympos in Haywards Heath.

International Malaysian scholar Kaur took the women's singles title at the third and final Elite tournament of the season with a 21-12 21-11 win as fellow Leeds Met student Munn Tzin Bong found a tougher semi-final took its toll. BA (Hons) Sport Business Management student Munn Tzin Bong took three games to get the better of Caroline Westley 21-18 16-21 21-16 in her semi final whilst Kaur powered past Panuga Riou, winning 23-21 21-12.

Lim Kenn, who recently enjoyed success at the Portugal International, took the men's singles title in the pick of the finals as he overcame Ben Beckman 21-15 18-21 21-14 in a repeat of their final showdown at the Wimbledon Elite.

Kenn had earlier eased past Joshua Green in his semi-final 21-18 21-10.

It was an all Leeds Met affair in the mixed final where Mark Middleton and Jessica Fletcher went down to Harry Wright and Joanne Quay 16-21 21-12 21-13. Joanne Quay then took her second title as she teamed up with Anita Raj Kaur to beat Tracey Baker and Catherine Grant 21-11 21-13 in the women's doubles final.

Commenting on the weekend's success Badminton Coach James Vincent said: "It was a brilliant end to the season for us. We have supported the badminton England national domestic circuits for the last 3 years, and to take 4 titles out of 5 shows a big dominance of Carnegie players in the circuits."

"I must pay some recognition to the players for their professional attitude in staying focussed at the end of what has been a very long, hard season for us. Easily our players could have faltered, but they continued to prepare and stayed focussed right to the end. The professionalism of how our players conducted themselves was inspiring for me. I am very proud of all our achievements this season, and it has definitely been the best year of my working life!"

"We will now review and evaluate our programme, and plan to deliver a better programme next season in a bid to develop further internationally."
