Double success for Leeds Met cricketers

Double success for Leeds Met cricketers

30/04/2010

Men's and women's cricket players at Leeds Met are celebrating following wins over Loughborough in BUCS.

The men's side travelled to the Midlands whilst the girls hosted Loughborough at Kirkstall having never beaten their arch rivals and both picked up outstanding victories to continue their unbeaten starts to the season.

The men's side posted an impressive 221-5 in their fifty overs with Mark Brown top scoring with 80 whilst Charlie Swallow impressed with 72 not out.  The Leeds Met bowling attack then took apart the Loughborough openers restricting them to 13-3 and 46-7 before bowling them out for just 123 in forty overs.  John Butterfield led the charge with 4 for 21 in his ten overs whilst Andy Tetlour also starred posting figures of 3 for 28 from his ten overs.

The women's side, who had lost out twice previously to Loughborough in championship finals, continued the day's impressive form as Loughborough won the toss and elected to bat.  Tight bowling and fielding meant that Lougborough scored 207-9 in their fifty overs with Lottie Klott picking up 2-39 from ten overs.  Jess Scothern took 3-48 whilst Kate Harvey restricted Loughborough with 1-23 from her 9 overs.

A late change in the Leeds Met batting order due to a muscle injury sustained by captain Rochelle Petty meant that Kate Harvey was promoted up the order and she wasted no time in setting about the target scoring 74 not out.  She was joined by an impressive Sarah Rigg who scored 48 not out to bring Leeds Met victory inside 42 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets.

The men's side now host The University of Leeds in a key varsity battle next week at Kirkstall whilst the women travel to Durham hoping to extend their fine start to the season.

Commenting on the victories head coach Andy Siddall said: "It's the first time we've beaten Loughborough and I'm delighted by the results.  The women won convincingly with 8 overs to spare and there were a number of impressive performances by the players.  The men's side included four first year players so it's great to see them perform.  The teams have put a lot of work in over the winter and it's pleasing to see their hard work start to pay off."
