Athletes prepare for World Student Games

27/06/2011

Leeds Metropolitan University will have a strong gymnastic representation at this summer's World Student Games after students Ashley Watson, Matt Firth, Sam Fern and Becky Hall were selected as four of just seven artistic gymnasts representing Great Britain.

The World Student Games, to be held in Shenzhen, China, are the world's third largest sporting event behind only the Olympics and the Asia Games. The bi-annual event starts on August 12, and will see over 12,500 students from 150 countries compete across 20 sports, with Great Britain competing in 15.

Leeds Met gymnastic coach Chris Low believes that all four students should be aiming to reach the finals in China: "It is a fantastic achievement for all four gymnasts to be selected, and testament to their hard work and dedication", he said. "Their selection comes on the back of some excellent recent results both nationally and internationally.

"The standard of competition will be very high out in China but all the gymnasts are working hard to achieve their targets and qualify for the finals. If they can make the finals then it's all down to what happens on the day.

"For all the gymnasts this event will be a superb experience that can be a springboard for further success."
