Recent Projects

2011-12 - British Gymnastics - Participant/Player Insight

A 6 month project to find out more about the needs and wants of gymnasts at different ages (0-4 years, 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-14 years and so on) and pathways (beginner, recreational, talent and high performance).

The work involved analysis of existing research and information (e.g. Active People and Taking Part), interviews with gymnastics 'experts', and extensive interviews with coaches, gymnasts and parents.

British Gymnastics is using the information to inform their participation and performance strategies, funding applications, sport development and coaching programmes and practices.

2011-12 - England Hockey and Rugby Football League - Coach Development

An on-going project to support England Hockey and the Rugby Football League with their talent development coach development programmes.

The work involves interviews with coaches, video-taped coaching sessions, and post session reflections to help coaches understand how their session objectives are being achieved or otherwise in terms of player/performer outcomes.

The project has been very well received by the coaches, coach developers and performance directors in these sports, and the coaches believe it has had a significant impact on their practice.

2011 - Football Association - Research Reviews to Support the High Performance Academy

A 6 month project to analyse the latest research in the areas of practice and training (the 10,000 hours rule), coaching styles, and coaching aura and impression management.

The work involved extensive literature searches, analysis, report writing and learning tool development.

The Football Association has been using the research with high performing coaches in its recently developed elite coaches' academy programme.

The FA has recently commissioned Sport Coaching Innovations at Leeds Met to undertake further research work on player and coach competencies, coach developers, and an international coach education benchmarking study.
