Intramural Finals week is the biggest to date

Intramural Finals week is the biggest to date

Over the past two weeks, intramural teams have been taking part in the end of season finals across four different sports. The intramural leagues are recreational leagues for students to participate in within the University against other courses, halls of residence and friends, and have been running since October.

This year saw some dramatic and nail-biting finals, with some outstanding teamwork and performances. The winners of the 5-a-side football league were The Geometeers, and last year's winners of the 7-a-side Football final, The Undecidables, easily defended their title for 2011/12. In the hotly contested 11-a-side football final, the Division 1 winners, Dinamo Cheesecake, overcame the Division 2 winners, GYRO in a 3-2 victory after several last minute goal line clearances. And in the Netball Inferno, who have been unbeaten all season, went on to lift the winning shield after a comfortable final match.

2011/12 5-a-side champions:               2011/12 7-a-side champions:

The Geometeers                                   The Undecidables

2011/12 11-a-side champions:             2011/12 Netball champions:

Dinamo Cheesecake                             Inferno

All the team winners then went on to play the respective winners of the intramural leagues at Leeds University, who were seeking their virst victory in the annual Intramural Varsity competition since it started back in 2005/06.

Leeds Metropolitan University gained wins in the 5-a-side and 7-a-side football, the Touch Rugby and the Netball. However, after wins in the Badminton, Squash, Tennis, Hockey and 11-a-side Football, Leeds University lifted the winning trophy after a dramatic 11-a-side Football final went to the wire with penalties.

The day was played in fantastic spirits amongst friends, which really demonstrated the importance of social sport at both universities.

Well done to all students and volunteers who took part!
