Weekend of success for Leeds Met

Weekend of success for Leeds Met

14/12/2009

Leeds Met sports teams enjoyed considerable success over the weekend with a clean sweep of results for the University's sides.

Leeds Carnegie Ladies beat Chelsea 2-0 to reach the FA Premier League cup final with a late goal from Carnegie Scholar Carla Cantrell and another from Sophie Bradley.  Despite not having played a full game since the quarter-final against Blackburn on 8 November, Leeds always looked the more likely of the teams to win, despite an even, dour first half in which both teams looked a little ring-rusty.
The side will now face Everton in the final on the 11 February.

In the first game of the Super League, Leeds Carnegie Netball beat University rivals Loughborough Lightening 47-42 in a thrilling and hard-fought encounter at Headingley Campus.  Since taking over the reins at Leeds, Head Coach Anna Newell, has always tried to give youth a chance and on Saturday she gave full debuts to no fewer than three 17 year old players.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter the scores were locked at 34-34 with the lead changing hands several times. The stage was set for and exciting final quarter and the home crowd rallied behind Carnegie.  Leeds brought on their Captain, Jo Davies, at Goal Defence and Jo Walker at Goal Attack with both making a real impact in the match. Leeds edged in front with Carla Dziwoki keeping her cool under pressure scoring 8 goals from 10 attempts.  The Leeds Defence put in some sterling work throughout and the home side eventually took the points with a valuable 47-42 win.

The men's basketball side were triumphant in National League 1 against Bristol Flyers to climb to second in the league, whilst their female counterparts beat Birmingham Aces to cement their place at the top of the tables.  Men's volleyball stayed at the top of National League 2 by defeating Sheffield 3-0 whilst the American Football side shutout York St John University 36-0 to remain unbeaten this season going into the Christmas break.
