Welcome to the Institute of Health & Wellbeing

The Institute for Health & Wellbeing undertakes research into the health status of individuals and communities and investigates issues including men’s health, healthy communities, health promotion, pain and nutrition and childhood obesity.

  • SHOWCASE:
    A Leeds Metropolitan University professor has been shortlisted for an international award following his pioneering research into men’s health in Europe.
  • SHOWCASE:
    A centre that will tackle issues of health and wellbeing has been launched at Leeds Metropolitan University.
  • SHOWCASE:
    The Institute for Health and Wellbeing has been set up to foster the generation of research and knowledge in specific areas relating to the health status of individuals, communities and nations.
  • Themes:
    • Professor Alan White’s research is focused on identifying what factors influence the health of men, how men manage their health and wellbeing, and what effect ill-health has on their lives.
    • Professor Jane South leads a research theme on Healthy Communities – this a research programme that links research, education and public engagement around the theme of community health and active citizenship.
    • Professor Mark Johnson’s research investigates the science of pain and its management. He conducts Cochrane reviews and meta-analyses, experimental studies on human participants and clinical trials on patients experiencing pain.
    • Childhood obesity is recognised as a major public health issue both nationally and internationally. Dr Pinki Sahota leads an area that aims to address the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity.
    • The first of Professor Rachael Dixey’s current research themes is centred around children and young people’s health, globally and within the UK, especially in relation to education, schools, social justice and citizenship.
    • Professor Steve Robertson’s main research interests are around social theories of masculinity, their application to aspects of health and illness.
