Centre Staff

The Centre for Research into Diversity in the Professions is a small, but growing interdisciplinary unit. Its core members have diverse backgrounds and expertise in the areas of the professions (and in particular the legal profession and architecture), diversity, gender, ethnicity, minority rights and identity, professional training, employability, work-related learning, PDP and enterprise in the curriculum.

Key staff and contact details

Professor Hilary Sommerlad is the Centre Director. She is an internationally recognised researcher and author in the areas of gender and the legal profession, and acts as convenor of two professional research groups.  She is currently conducting research into the broader issues of diversity and the legal profession and is consultant on two Diversity projects.

Dr. Kevin Hylton is a Reader in the Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education and Associate Director of the Centre. He is also Course leader for the MA in Sport, Leisure and Equity. A founder member of the Black sports forum (BEMSport) in Yorkshire, Kevin has worked with a number of governing bodies on issues of equity. Kevin's research interests revolve around (anti)racism, diversity, equality and Critical Race Theory. Kevin is author of 'Race' and Sport: Critical Race Theory (Routledge, 2009).

Jaki Howes is a Research Fellow at the Centre. She is also a Principal Lecturer in Architecture, is a past convenor of the RIBA National IT Committee and is currently Master of Students in the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects and a QAA subject assessor. Her research interests include the use of IT in teamwork and curriculum development to enhance access to and progression within the construction industry.

Lee Edwards a research fellow of the Centre. She is a Senior Lecturer in public relations at Leeds Business School. Her research focuses on diversity and power in the public relations profession.
