How to apply

You can apply for a research degree at any time during the academic year.

Enrolment dates

Our current enrolment dates are:

• February (deadline for applications is the end of the preceding November)*
• June (deadline for applications is the end of March)*
• October (deadline for applications is the end of July)*

Successful applicants will be required to attend our compulsory university induction at the beginning of their programme of study.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for each award are detailed within the University Research Regulations. You can access the full regulations online, or by emailing the Research Student Administration team.

If your qualifications don’t match with the requirements in the Research Regulations, you may still be able to start a research programme if you have ‘non-standard’ qualifications that can also be considered on their own merits on a case by case basis.

Entry Qualifications for Admission

Applicants for registration for a research award will be expected to hold a good first degree and for professional doctorates, relevant professional experience. For entry requirements for individual research award degrees, please refer to the Research Regulations.

English Language Qualification

If your first language is not English, the University will require evidence that you have the necessary language skills to fulfil the requirements of the award. You will need to provide evidence of a minimum International English Language Testing System Grade 6.5 (IELTS 6.5) with no individual sub-score below 6.0 or equivalent for all research awards.

Non-standard Entry Qualifications

If you do not currently entry qualifications as stated in the Research Regulations, your application may be considered on its merits. You will need to demonstrate and evidence that your background knowledge is appropriate and that you have the ability to carry out the research to the level required for the award you wish to apply to.
