JeS Justification of Resources - attachment to grant applications

All Research Councils require applicants to provide a justification of the resources requested for the proposed research. Currently, this should be included in the 'Case for Support' attachment. However, not all applicants have been providing adequate justification, especially for new items that can be requested under full economic costing.

The Research Councils therefore have decided to introduce a seperate attachment type to the JeS sytem, called 'Justification for Resources', for this purpose. The JeS system Help will give you details of the information required.

BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC and NERC will implement this change from
16th  May 2006 and the ' Justification of Resources' attachment will then be mandatory for all applications. AHRC will implement the change for applications received after 1 September 2006.

MRC, which does not use the Je-S system will be introducing an analogous change in September 2006.  PPARC is still considering when it would be most appropriate to implement the change. Please refer to the JeS announcement document in the right hand section of this page for further details.

Full Economic Costing (fEC)

From 1st September 2005 all research council and Other Government Department (OGD) bids need to be calculated on a Full Economic Cost (fEC) basis. A project costing tool is available and training sessions have been delivered during September 2005. Further sessions are available on request. For assistance costing projects please contact Victoria Wright or email v.wright@leedsmet.ac.uk.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF RESEARCH COUNCIL FEC GRANTS

In 2005 the Research Councils published a harmonised set of core terms and conditions for those research grants funded on the basis of full economic costs (FEC).   The Research Councils have now reviewed these terms and conditions in the light of experience with FEC and other recent developments and, most significantly, have combined the terms and conditions for Research Grants with those for Fellowships into a single harmonised set.  These have been finalised with advice from the Research Organisations Consultative Group.

The new terms and conditions, together with a summary of the main changes, are included here
