MA Northern Studies

The MA in Northern Studies is a flexible programme constructed around the study of the north of England past and present, understanding its rich heritage, diverse contemporary society, and exploring its role in modern British society. The common themes are exploring:

  • Identities and boundaries - what is the North?
  • Coherence and contrasts - what makes a regional identity?
  • What is 'northerness'?

The programme is highly flexible. The common elements are a core module: The North Past and Present which lays the foundation for further study by engaging with the history and contemporary life of the North. Students will also undertake a dissertation of around 15,000 words on a subject of their choice, supported by a research-methods module.

The remaining 4 modules are negotiated by each student to enable a theme to be developed for their studies. This may be by:

  • accessing other Masters modules from other programmes, either as taught modules or by related individual study; and/or
  • studying individual aspects of the North in more depth with Institute staff eg sporting history; the medieval north; music in the north.
