YouTube hits the heights

Leeds Met's YouTube channel attracted some of the highest viewing figures in the UK last week, thanks to our Summer Graduation Festival.

Building on last year's highly successful MetCast videos, which saw graduate trainee presenters working with the video team to bring daily highlights of Summer Graduation, last week's graduation festival saw more comprehensive and exciting coverage.

This included a daily roundup of each day's events, student profiles, and in-depth interviews with the recipients of our honorary degrees, which included Gabby Logan and Dragons' Den star James Caan.

At its peak last week, our YouTube channel was one of the most popular in the UK, peaking at number 31, and beating heavyweight broadcasters such as Sky News.

The channel is currently at number 60 in the UK, eclipsing any other British university's online video presence.

The success of YouTube was mirrored by the popularity of our streaming video, which included live coverage of our graduation ceremonies, which were watched in countries as far afield as Bangladesh and America, by graduands' relatives who were unable to travel to the UK. All our graduation ceremonies are now available to view online here.

Leeds Met Online Content Manager Cris Neill said: "The success of our YouTube channel over Summer Graduation highlights the underlying growth of our video content, which has assumed an increasingly important role in communicating our values and successes to the world at large.

"These videos give prospective students an impression of life at Leeds Met, and are a great way of showcasing our achievements. It's an exciting and creative time to be working with video, and we are confident that our YouTube channel will be even richer in its content a year from now."

Leeds Met video team member Martin Wan, who played a key role in organising Leeds Met's daily graduation coverage added: "The best thing about our graduation coverage is talking to all the happy and excited students and their families. All the students graduating have great things to say about their experience at Leeds Met and it's a joy to share in so many peoples positive experiences."
