Work carried out by Leeds Met students is set to be used as a vehicle to a Police anti-drink driving campaign over the summer months.

Drink Driver 2, a hard-hitting video produced by a group of Innovation North Creative Technology students warning drink drivers of the dangers of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, has been selected by West Yorkshire Police for use in the publicity surrounding their Summer Drink and Drug Driving campaign.

The video, which features a mix of computer generated imagery and real footage, shows a man drinking at a bar before moving on to play on a driving simulator. The film closes with the words Game Over on screen, after the man's attempts at controlling his vehicle end in him hitting a pedestrian and sustaining injuries as if he were driving in real life.

Dr Steve Wilkinson, Principal Lecturer commented, "I encourage my students to create something worthwhile to help the local community for their final year project.  In this case they picked up on this message and came up with something very useful which hits the right notes with young people; they really got under the skin of this one.

Projects Manager, Janice Priestley made the link between Leeds Met and the West Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Partnerships team, having previously worked with them on student safety promotions at Leeds Met. "The police were enthusiastic about working with us again and were impressed that young people wanted to address this issue. The anti-drink driving campaign is running throughout the whole of West Yorkshire and not just a local area promotion.  It's a win-win situation and we hope to do more work with them next year."

Inspector Joanne Field, head of West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit, "This video is fantastic because it proves that the message is getting through to young people and that they are prepared to take action themselves to spread the message about not drinking or taking drugs and driving.

"It is a credit to the students that they decided to tackle this important issue and we are proud to be using their video to support our work to combat drinking and driving."

The video will be used as part of the summer anti-drink and drug driving campaign that gets underway today.

People can ring Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 to report anyone they think are drink drivers, their vehicle registration numbers and the places and times they go drinking.
