Former postgraduate Creative Technology student, Richard England has, for the second year running, been nominated by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in the Children's Awards category.

Richard and the team at Gamelab London were commissioned by Mencap, a charity that looks to value and support people with learning disabilities. They were asked to create an easy-to-use online tool that engages families, friends and supporters to explore, prepare and plan their future together. The BAFTA nominated website, PlanNet, provides a visual and audio experience for young people in both an educational and fun way, helping young people explore and discuss money, making choices, self direction and relationships, using video, profiles, accesibility and a personal area to facilitate online interaction. The short films were funded by the BBC and the characters also become examples in the help sections of subsequent zones. The video player features many accessibility features such as audio and visual captions, and as a result of this the team have subsequently been commissioned by the BBC to create an accessible player interface used by the BBC Raw site - details of this can be viewed at http://www.bbc.co.uk/raw/.

The project faces tough competition from the BBC project, Skills For Life and Channel4 project, Battlefront, who will also be competing for the Learning - Secondary prize.

Speaking about the nomination Richard said, "Gamelab have also already been nominated three times this year; for best drama for the Mencap online mini-series Us 5 and two under the "Learning - Secondary" category. This is an amazing achievement considering that we're going up against the "big boys" in the BBC and Channel 4, who have far more in the way of resources and budgets. Fingers crossed, but I'm glad to have got this far - and especially two years in a row."

The EA British Academy Children's Awards will take place on Sunday 29 November 2009, and will include appearances from the phenomenal Chuckle Brothers, The Legend of Dick and Dom and cast members from The Sarah Jane Adventures.
