NOF elect new Chairman for region

Professor Paul Gately, Director of Carnegie Weight Management, has been elected Chair of the National Obesity Forum for Yorkshire and Humber.

It will be the first time that Chairmanship of a regional network has been handed over, and members of the regional network voted to elect Professor Gately. Paul will take over from Dr Matt Capehorn, who is stepping down to concentrate on his role as Clinical Director of the NOF.

Dr Matt Capehorn said: "Professor Paul Gately was an obvious choice for NOF Yorkshire and Humber Chairman given his background in weight management and existing profile in the region. Carnegie Weight Management is at the forefront of developing programmes for overweight and obese children and young people, and these programmes are prime examples of best practice in this region and throughout the UK."

Professor Paul Gately, Professor of Exercise and Obesity at Leeds Metropolitan University and Director of Carnegie Weight Management, has over 20 years experience in the field of health, exercise, nutrition and obesity. Professor Gately has delivered over 250 keynote presentations and scientific publications and has co-authored seven book chapters. He has contributed to several policy documents on childhood obesity and is a frequent consultant to government agencies, health organisations and corporations throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.

The main aim of the network is to enable professionals to come together and share their knowledge at obesity summit meetings throughout the year. The Chair of each region is responsible for facilitating the networking of its professionals and organises the development of learning's to better deliver weight management services across the region. Ultimately, a best practice model will be created and made available for use by the whole NOF.

Professor Gately said: "This is another fantastic opportunity to work with likeminded professionals to tackle obesity at a regional level. Yorkshire is already leading the way in tackling obesity through innovative partnerships and programmes. I am delighted to have been elected to Chair and am looking forward to working with the NOF to raise awareness and champion the cause of obesity."
