Over 100 Leeds Met students put their skills into practice to ensure the fifth Live At Leeds festival was a hit.
Our students organised and hosted the Unconference event on Friday, then on Saturday managed the wristband exchange at Leeds Met and ran the Met Bar stage.
Hannah Miller, a third year BA (Hons) Events Management student who co-managed the wristband exchange, said: "It's a brilliant event to get to work on. I have applied for my first Temporary Events Notice (TEN) which is brilliant to be able to write on my CV that I have had one. It has been my favourite module from the start as I much prefer the hands-on learning approach, getting to put theory in to practice and build up on experiences from my work placement last year.
"It means I can confidently include these things on my CV and back them up at interview with experience. It has helped build upon my communication skills, particularly attending client meetings and the support of our tutors has been fantastic."
Live at Leeds is run by Leeds-based music promotions company Futuresound and was originally created to celebrate 800 years of Leeds. As well as working behind the scenes, Leeds Met students, staff and alumni also featured among the line-up which covered 11 venues within the city.
Final-year Events Management student, Lucy McCann has been involved in a senior role in the overall planning of the festival this year. She spent the full week before Live at Leeds in Futuresound's office. Lucy commented: "Working at Live At Leeds has helped me enhance my skills, knowledge and experience within the events and music industry. By working on such a well-established event, it allows great experience and opportunities for yourself and your CV, as you work closely with organisations within Leeds, networking and making contacts."
The Unconference was created to bring together a panel of industry experts to help students and local bands to get gigs, approach record labels and get the best out of their recordings with a chance to have their music played and receive feedback and advice on labels to approach. The event was so successful last year that this year it moved to a larger venue, the 300-capacity Leeds University Students' Union. This year's conference has been organised by a group of five Events Management students as part of their coursework.
Alongside the events management students a team of music technology and music production students set up and ran the audio for the bands playing at the Unconference and a showcase of final year students' music projects.
