Harnessing the power of Facebook

Students at Leeds Met can now search the University's Library Catalogue via Facebook, thanks to a pioneering project launched by staff.

The Library Facebook application will allow students to search the Catalogue, while also allowing them to access their library details via the site, enabling them to see how many books they have out, how many they have on hold and what -  if any - fines they have.

The launch of the application on Facebook follows pan-University co-operation between colleagues in Information, Media and Technology Services and Libraries and Learning Innovation along with members of the Web and Legal teams.

The idea for a Library Facebook application was suggested by student Anna Hepworth, who wrote her thesis about Social Networking and Libraries, as part of her MSc Information Studies. Anna was nominated as a finalist for the 2008 Ideas Factory award for this proposal.

As a result of the award nomination it was passed to colleagues in LLI to look at developing the application.
