Leeds Met Students' Union Community Reps and Law Society members will be hitting the streets of Leeds to take part in Operation: Balloon, part of the Knowledge campaign, to help raise awareness of personal and home safety.
The students will team up with local Police, Unipol and other universities to deliver balloons through unsecured houses, with tips about how to improve home safety.
The Knowledge campaign, which was relaunched in the city on 26 October, sees a number of key organisations in Leeds working together to improve life in the city for students, allowing them to get the best out of Leeds and making their time at university as enjoyable as possible. The group working on the campaign helps to show the students of Leeds that through simple and easy actions they can reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime.
The campaign also highlights the true level of crime in Leeds, with the aim of reducing the myths circulating within the student community and empowering them with up-to-date and correct information about crime that occurs in the areas they live.
Associate President Community Wellbeing in the Leeds Met Students' Union, Liam Challenger said, "It's really important that we carry on the hard work people did during Freshers' Festival, spreading the message of personal and home safety through the rest of the year, as 60 per cent of burglaries happen through open doors and windows.
"It's about the Police, the universities and the Students' Unions working together to help give facts and advice to students across as many mediums as possible, helping them not to become a victim and supporting them if they do."
