The Leeds Met men's handball team have seen success as they won the bronze medal in the recent Handball Championships where they competed against 15 teams on the 20 and 21 of February. Leeds Met finished top of their group and even beat last year's winners Oxford in the quarter finals. They were eventually knocked out in the semi-finals against Manchester in a tight game where they fell 9-6. In the third place play off Leeds Met beat Nottingham University 4-3 to claim the bronze medal.
The women's handball team also competed at the championships but unfortunately didn't make it out of the group stages after being unable to pick up any points in their games. Their impressive goals tally, however, allowed them to finish in fifth place out of seven, finishing above Oxford and Manchester seconds.
Handball is often described as a sport combining all the best elements of basketball, water polo and football with a little bit of rugby thrown in for good measure.
Leeds Met's handball team is currently in the Northern Division League and has been turning heads with their 1st & 2nd league positions over the last two years. With the 2012 Olympics on the horizon and England playing the first Olympics games in the sports history, handball is becoming an underdog sport to be reckoned with.
Constantin Quambusch, the Club Captain explains what it's all about and why students from the Faculty of Business & Law love to play the game. Constantin, a BA International Business student, joined Leeds Met from Germany through the University's Study Abroad Programme. Reflecting on his time as a student, Constantin commented: "The mix of students and professionals from different cultures really enhances your experience as a student. Learning English and a range of business skills has helped me stand out from the crowd and made me into a successful graduate."
He also commented on his coaching: "There are approximately 35 international students in the team, many from the Faculty of Business & Law. The team is a big family and one of the many highlights of my experience was going to the University National Handball Championships in Nottingham last year. It was like a school trip for us all, we had so much fun and we really connected with one another. These types of memories I'll take with me forever."
Constantin will be hanging up his boots this year and has plans to stop coaching. He will be flying to China on 1 April to work as a graduate at Otto International, a professional trading organisation. He did however say: "I can't stay away from England and I'm thinking of coming back to study an MBA or MA International Business at Leeds Met."
