The Dean of the Faculty of Business & Law has only been in position for four months and is already causing a stir. On Friday morning Martin Allison, who started at the University in February, was arrested, but all for a good cause.
Martin agreed to be 'arrested' as part of a fundraising initiative organised by St Gemma's Hospice. Jail and Bail, which took place on Friday, saw consenting participants across the city being 'arrested' in their place of work by 'police officers' who notified them of their 'crime' and then took them to the Town Hall to be tried. Following their trial the 'criminals' were taken to the hall's original Victorian cells where they were able to call friends, family, colleagues, business associates etc in order to raise bail money.
Participants were asked to raise £500 for their 'sins' but as this wasn't compulsory they were able to bail themselves out at no cost at any time. Although this was the first time St Gemma's has attempted an initiative like this, it set its goals high and is aiming to raise at least £3,000, which would pay for 22 terminally ill patients to be visited at home by a St Gemma's Hospice Community Nurse or would fund a bed at the In-Patient Unit for eight days.
