Big Switch Off proves success

The University's green credentials have been bolstered by the success of scheme to save electricity.
Last month, staff members throughout Leeds Met were invited to make a special effort to turn off their electrical appliances over the weekend. This included items such as computers and lights.
The initiative formed part of the 'Big Switch Off' campaign, which saw the University working in collaboration with Leeds City Council.
Figures released today point to the scheme's success. The University's Calverley Street site used 2 per cent less energy on the weekend of the Big Switch off, the Electric Press used 17 per cent less, Queens Square House used 10 per cent less, and overall, the Civic Quarter campus used 3 per cent less.
Mark Warner, Sustainability Manager at Leeds Met said: "As with everything, saving energy can not be done by one person. It has to be a team effort and use a combination of technology, media and plain old human will power.
"The Big Switch Off was a good example of these elements coming together and having a positive result. The key now is to build this into day-today behaviours and wider technical solutions to ensure the university is as carbon efficient as possible."
