A Leeds Met academic has offered insights into this year's rush for Christmas shopping, as part of a BBC broadcast.

John Temperley, Senior Marketing lecturer at the University, appeared on the Working Lunch programme yesterday - watch the broadcast below.

According to the programme's presenters, more than half the UK is already buying Christmas presents in a bid to spread the cost of seasonal spending.

With many high-profile retailers suffering from a down-turn in spending, economic analysts believe that this Christmas is crucial if confidence on the high street is to return.

Mr Temperley told the BBC: "We really don't know quite how things are going to pan out over October, November, December period, and certainly if shoppers hold off until the last minute there could be quite a few retailers heading for the doctors to get some tranquilisers."
