The 75th anniversary of the former Carnegie College, now part of Leeds Met, was celebrated over the weekend with an International Gymnastics Gala and gymnastic competition which will feature an Olympic medal winning line-up.
The Carnegie Faculty staged the Rose Bowl Gymnastics Competition at Headingley Campus to commemorate the college's 75th anniversary. The event was an invitational men's artistic team gymnastics competition that saw some of the best male gymnasts competing from across the country as well as prestigious international guests. The competition is named after the University's distinctive Rose Bowl development in the Civic Quarter, which will host the Faculty of Business and Law, and is set to open in 2009.
Gymnastic champions and medallists Jorden Jovtchev, Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings also performed in the International Gymnastics Gala on Saturday evening. Bulgarian Jorden Jovtchev is a twice World Champion and the first ever gymnastics athlete to compete in five Olympic Games. Louis Smith won a bronze medal in Beijing 2008 becoming the first British gymnast to win an individual Olympic medal in 100 years. Louis also won the bronze medal on the pommel horse at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart. Daniel Keatings is the Current European Junior Champion and was a GB representative at Beijing 2008.
