Student Academic Representatives (STARs)

The University is committed to ensuring that the views of students are appropriately represented in the management of academic quality and standards. This is achieved through Student Academic Representatives (STARs).  The Academic Regulations provide the basis for student academic representation, which is fully described in the Policy and Procedures Relating to Student Academic Representation (see link in right hand column).

The University's regulations establish a number of informal focus groups and formal forums which allow issues to be raised by students and fed into the review and development of academic activities.  Students of each scheme / taught course are entitled to volunteer as Course STARs, Research STARs and Faculty STARs, in accordance with the Policy and Procedures. Further details of these roles are outlined in the recruitment procedures and role descriptions (see link in right hand column).

Faculties, with the oversight of the Governance Services Team, are responsible for recruiting STARs in accordance with centrally devised targets and a range of STARs Co-ordinators across the University oversee the recruitment process and liaise with the Registrar & Secretary's Office and the Students' Union regarding the fulfilment of these targets (see links in right hand column).

The University and the Students' Union work together to raise awareness of student academic representation and to provide training and development for elected representatives.
