Sale and Re-development of F, G and H Buildings
It is almost 4 years since A block was vacated, staff and facilities relocated to Headingley and the building was demolished. As the first part of dramatic estate changes we took the decision to vacate and sell parts of the site, rather than invest and retain the space, a decision which would benefit both our students and staff.
Downing Developments bought the land and buildings, which were surplus to the university's requirement and contracts were exchanged on 18th February 2011. Their view for the prime site was to create a residential village; privately owned and managed that would be a great location for students at several of the HE venues in Leeds. They were granted planning permission for the conversion of F and part H block to student residences and a retail unit. Downing have completed demolition of the sold element of G with an aim to create a piazza through the campus. The planners are keen to see an improvement in the area that they consider to be of significance.
Work is progressing to programme and is due to finish in September 2012. With the majority of the demolition works now complete, much of the work will be inside the former F and H blocks. Downing are aware of various university events and exams periods and we have a great working relationship with Downing, with which we can work to minimise disruption caused by the development. The contractors will manage their site from the Woodhouse Lane car park entrance and have their office base in H block.
Please Note: Fire Escape Routes have been re-determined to support the loss of external spaces. Details on the relevant Fire Escape Routes can be found in the PDF links in the right hand tab.
