This scheme is a voluntary programme run by the Careers Service working in conjunction with the alumni community. The aim of the scheme is to support and encourage students to manage their own career development, maximize their potential, and develop skills to improve employment prospects. It is designed to ease the transition from study to employment for current students by bringing them together with professionals from public and private sectors.
In simple terms mentoring is a one-to-one relationship between a more experienced person and someone who is less experienced. This is a voluntary scheme that matches professionals (mentors), who might be recent graduates working in a particular area, with Leeds Met students (mentees). It provides an opportunity for students to gain 'real world' insights into their chosen profession - who better to ask about a job than a person sucessfully doing it? Mentoring offers scope for the personal and professional development of both parties, especially in areas such as leadership and communication.
The scheme is not a work experience or paid employment programme. It is a mentoring relationship built on mutual respect, constructive feedback, openness and a willingness to learn and share. Mentors provide advice, guidance and support encouraging mentees to explore options, focus thoughts, identify their career goals and develop their job-seeking skills.
