CD-ROM Update

Since the last CD-ROM news feature, a number of changes have taken place to the CD-ROM service provided by LSS. This piece will bring you up to date with these changes and highlight some of the valuable new additions we have to offer you.

If you have any queries about any of these products, or would like to know more, please contact your Tutor Librarian.

Stand-Alone Services

Social Trends (Quick-Reference Workstation, Beckett Park)

Social Trends on CD-ROM is produced by the Office for National Statistics and is a complete archive of the first 25 years of publication of Social Trends. The CD-ROM will allow for swift retrieval of required information, and selections may be made from individual years, or, by using a Master Index feature, topics may be explored over any required date range.

All text and graphics contained on the CD can be saved as files within the terms of the copyright licence. Additionally, information from the tables may be saved in one of a number of different spreadsheet data formats for further statistical analysis if required.

(This item will shortly be available at other site libraries)

Avery Index (Brunswick)

Provides references to journal articles in architecture and design.

Environmental Health (Calverley Street)

Comprehensive summaries of environmental health and safety legislation, guidelines and reports from the UK and European Union.

Imaging Atlas of Human Anatomy (Quick-Reference Workstation, Calverley Street)

Networked services

UKOP — UK Official Publications

This disk provides full bibliographic details for both HMSO and other official publications. Previously, UKOP was on offer in all libraries as a stand-alone service, but it is now networked to provide a more up-to-date service.

Sociofile

An index to and abstracts of the literature of sociology from 1,800 journals published world-wide. It includes abstracts of journal articles published in Sociological Abstracts since 1974, and the enhanced bibliographic citations for relevant dissertations that have been added to the database since 1986. Also included is the Social Planning Policy and Development Abstracts database, with detailed journal article abstracts since 1980. Like UKOP, this was a stand-alone service but has now been networked to provide access across campuses.

Bookfind

Bookfind replaces Global Books In Print as the CD-ROM to cover books in print (and out of print!). Bookfind works on Windows and is a versatile database.

Mintel

We believe that this CD-ROM will prove to be the most popular addition to the service for this year. The CD provides in full text all reports in Mintel’s printed Market Intelligence, Retail Intelligence, Leisure Intelligence and Finance Intelligence which many of you will have used in the Library. Sections of reports can be highlighted for downloading to diskette, or whole reports can be downloaded, including tables or charts. These can be retrieved into a Word document for printing out (subject to copyright). As you will see from the graphic accompanying this text, the database also includes additional information such as daily digests, advertising and promotion and case studies.
