  • Open All Hours

Book-return bins are available outside each of the site libraries, and you can now return books throughout the day as well as when the libraries are closed. This should be of considerable benefit when you want to return one or two items but wish to avoid queuing. Please note that short-loan items should not be deposited in the bins, and that you are still liable for any fines due on items left in the book-return bins.

The bins are very robust and have been designed to minimize the risk of theft, and they are emptied daily by library staff. If you use this facility, however, you should be aware that responsibility for any items deposited in the book-return bins remains with you until the items are discharged by library staff.

    Self Renewal

Dedicated self-renewal terminals have been installed in each of the libraries. This new fast-track service means that, if you just wish to renew an item, you can now use one of these terminals and avoid queueing either for service at the counter or to use one of the catalogue terminals.

Please note that you cannot renew items which are required by another reader or are overdue.

If you are a member of staff with a networked PC in your office, you may like to note that you can renew your library books from your own office by accessing the library system, LIBERTAS, via the network. Further details are available from any site library.

    Telephone Renewals

You probably know that you can phone the librararies to renew your library books — just phone any of the site libraries to renew your item:

Please note, however, that we are now giving priority to personal callers. If we are very busy, a telephone answering machine will be attached to the above numbers to advise you to call back later.

    Self-Issue Terminal

Over the last few months, we have been testing a self-issue terminal in the Brunswick Library on behalf of SLS (Information Systems), the suppliers of the LIBERTAS library system, and 3M, suppliers of library security systems. It has now been decided to move the terminal to the Calverley Street Library to test it in a busier environment.

If you use the Calverley Street Library, you can now try it for yourself. The terminal uses computer graphics to guide you through issuing a book. Before an issue can take place, you must enter your PIN - this guards against misuse. On successful completion of the issue, a receipt is printed and the security device in the book is desensitized so that you can leave the library without activating the security barrier.

We hope that the use of this terminal will help cut down the amount of time spent queuing, although if you have overdue books or outstanding fines you will be asked to go to the counter to sort matters out.

The terminal is not suitable for the issue of videos.
