I have recently been appointed to the new post of Senior Assistant Librarian, having worked for LSS in Calverley Street since November 1989 in various capacities.
My new job is concerned with streamlining the way in which we acquire all new material for the University libraries, from ordering a book until it is available on the shelves, with a view to making the process more efficient and consistent. I will be concerned with quality control, training of staff involved in the different parts of the procedure, and improving our manuals and training materials. I feel it is important that this aspect of our service achieves high standards, together with as efficent a use of staff and resources as possible.
Other parts of my job include providing assistance and back-up to the Sub Librarian, Systems and Technical Services, for the running of the library automation system, as well as continuing to be involved in cataloguing new stock and undertaking reference and information work on the Library Enquiry Desk.
Although I am based at Calverley Street, my responsibilities are cross-site, so I expect to be kept rather busy!
After a valiant struggle against cancer, Eddie Mitchell died on Friday 1 November. Eddie was appointed to the School of Education in the mid-seventies, and transferred into the then Educational Technology Unit in 1979. Eddie was based at Beckett Park and witnessed the constant developments, both in accommodation and technical facilities, during the last few years. As always, Eddie was keen to learn and contribute fully to these changes, and he will be very much missed by his team.
Alistair Tosh, Graphic Technician, retired on January 31 on grounds of ill health. Alistair has been struggling for over two years with a number of illnesses, and has now been diagnosed as terminally ill. It is with great regret that Alistair is giving up his job he has been fighting back and hoped to rejoin his colleagues in the Graphic team.
Alistair started in July 1984 as a Graphic Technician in the Educational Technology Unit. Several years later, we remember Alistair for his participation in the fashion show: he designed, together with the students, the set, tickets, programme and any other merchandise attached to the show. We also remember him for the abstract illustrations that form part of the image management adopted by a number of Faculties and Schools on numerous brochures and leaflets. We thank and praise Alistair for his contribution to the present look of many of the printed materials used and distributed by the University. We want him to know that all his colleagues and all the staff that worked with him appreciate his contribution and wish him the best.
Esmond Wyatt left the position of Print Production Services Manager for personal reasons after only a short time in the post. He has recently been replaced by Richard Berry.
Peter North has filled the post of AV Loans Counter Assistant at Beckett Park. New evening AV Loans Counter Assistants are Inderpal Sagoo, Christopher Murphy and Imran Ali.
Chris Fountain and Richard Archer have joined as Repro Assistants at Beckett Park and Calverley Street respectively.
