A new Sun server has been installed to enhance the speed of LMU's World-Wide Web service. The new machine takes over as the "proxy" server and cache machine, through which all accesses to the Web from LMU are made. It is many times faster than the previous machine, and has twice as much memory and hard disk (for the techies amongst you, it's a Sun UltraSPARC 143MHz cpu, with 128Mbytes RAM and 6.3Gbytes disk space).
The former proxy has moved over to become a dedicated primary Web server, also representing a considerable increase in speed. The server previously performing this function was also supporting a trial Usenet News service, which took up a significant proportion of its processing power. The combined effect of these changes should be a major improvement to the Web service.
The Solbourne machine displaced from the Web service is now being used solely for Usenet News. Once work on the current WWW service is completed and we have a stable environment, we will look at providing a wider News service.
