Beckett Park Learning Centre

The first phase of the building project to create the Learning Centre in James Graham Building at Beckett Park has been completed. The new building within the central quadrangle was formally handed over, a couple of weeks late, on 12th April 1996.

Occupation of the central area took place over the Easter vacation. This involved erection of shelving, delivery and assembly of furniture, and the wiring of equipment. It also involved clearing all the perimeter rooms on the first floor of the Library to enable them to be refurbished as Phase 2. This meant that all the bookstock and journals were relocated. With the exception of School Practice stock, which remains in its previous location, all material has been moved to the new reading rooms or onto the mezzanine floor.

Until Phase 2 is complete in September, all study space is now in the two reading rooms and the mezzanine floor.

There will be a quiet phase in the project for the duration of the Summer Term to avoid disruption during revision and exam periods. Noisy building work will begin from 17th June 1996 and there will be no access to the Schools Practice Collection from 14th June until 29th August 1996. Long loans will be available for these items so that they can be borrowed in advance.

Work to link the infill areas with the refurbished perimeter rooms, and work to redesign the counter area in the library entrance will result in the Beckett Park Library being closed throughout August 1996. Special arrangements are being set up for students who need to use the Library over this period.

Library materials relating to accountancy, business, economics, finance, management, and public relations are scheduled to be moved from Calverley Street to Beckett Park during the week beginning 19th August 1996. This means that this stock will be unavailable during the week of the move. It can be consulted again at Beckett Park when the Library re-opens after the August Bank Holiday on 28th August 1996. Other stock on Floors C5 and D5 of Calverley Street Library will be inaccessible for a couple of days at the beginning of the week (19th/20th August) whilst the removal company load the books into crates to transport them.

Discussions are under way with faculties based at City Campus regarding the need to duplicate business and management texts which are used by their students.

By the time you read this, the Advisors’ office will have moved from JG226 to JG219. This is the first stage of occupying the refurbished rooms on the north corridor, which has become part of the IT Suite ready for the equipment moving up with the Faculty of Business.

JG226 will now itself be refurbished as an improved Technicians’ room, and the Technicians will move there from JG225a during the summer.
