Professor John Shutt spoke at the IED Conference in Leeds on 21 January, looking at the prospects for the UK and Regional economy and the prospects for new economic growth. John′s presentation focused on the new jobs and new sectors which need to be encouraged and the economic assessments which have to be done in 2010 by every local authority in the region.

With new Integrated regional strategies, new city region economic prosperity boards being established and new European programmes for 2014–2020, there is much work to do following the General Election and a great deal of policy change occurring. The workshop focused on the urgent need to develop a new model of economic development throughout the region.

Every local authority in England has to start a new economic assessment from 1 April 2010 and link this in to the new Regional Integrated Strategies which have to be in place for 2011.
